Mathew Carey letters, 1802-1832.

The collection consists of fifteen letters, 1802-1832, chiefly about Carey's Philadelphia publishing concerns or writing, including three letters to Nicholas Biddle, and letters to Nicholas LeFavre, about the financial strain felt in publishing the 1802 edition of his Bible; to John M. O'Conner, including a statement of accounts; to bookseller Joseph Robinson, including an invoice; to Sarah Josepha Hale, about a drama; to Joseph R. Chandler, asking for a loan of $750.000; to Thomas H. White, about an article he had written and expected to have been published; to W.W. Woodward, about printing school Bibles with Psalms; to his son Henry C. Carey, about his expenses; two letters to Webster & Skinners describe a statement of accounts and an exchange of stock; a letter to Joseph O'Connor is written on Carey's list of books for sale, No. 3, 1 July 1817. Many include integral envelopes.

Mathew C. Carey (1760-1839) was a publisher, economist, and humanitarian. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to America in 1784, after involvement in Irish revolutionary activity.
